Third Annual Broad Avenue Art Walk this Friday!

The Historic Broad Business Association presents the third annual Broad Avenue Art Walk on Friday, October 3rd from 6-8 pm. The walk will feature galleries and open studios on Broad Avenue between Hollywood and Collins

In Gallery 1 of West Memorials at 2481 Broad there will be a viewing of recent work by David Nester (who also lives in the neighborhood).

Additionally there will be open studios at Dan Spector’s Archicast at 2527 Broad, Gerry Coulliard’s Metalworks at 2537 Broad, as well as Adam Shaw’s Studio at 2547 Broad.

At Material at 2553 Broad will present Quiet Pioneer, new paintings by Carrie Pollack.

The newly relocated Urban Art Commission will host an open house at 2549 Broad Avenue. The UAC will show work by Lester Julian Merriweather, an outdoor fence installation by Siphne Sylves, and a rooftop video projection by Ashley Gerst.

At 2613 Broad, Oddessa will host an exhibition featuring work by Douglas Degges, Richard Gamble, Alexandra Carter and Ben Moss with music by Kraubar and later a free show by the band the Coach and Four.

Around the corner at 2574 Sam Cooper (at Sam Cooper & Bingham) upstairs McCarty Partners will have an open house with an exhibition in their newly renovated art gallery space and downstairs there will be an open house and a group show at Splash Creative.

Additionally visitors can stop by the either Broadway Pizza or The Cove for refreshments.

Carrie Pollack Lecture and Reception

Material is excited to announce its eighth exhibition of the 2008 season: Carrie Pollack: Quiet Pioneer.

Carrie Pollack: Quiet Pioneer will run for one night only with a reception on Friday, October 3rd from 6-8 pm.

The artist will present a talk on her work hosted by Rhodes College in Blount Auditorium in Buckman Hall on Thursday, October 2nd at 7 p.m.

(The talk will be at Rhodes College but the show will be at Material.)

Carrie Pollack received her BFA from Alfred University and her MFA from the University of Iowa. She has been awarded residencies at Yaddo, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Vermont Studio Center and the Jentel Artist Residency Program. She has exhibited her work in a number of group shows nationally and internationally. She has had shows in Berlin, New York, Seattle, and Chicago. While she has lived in Brooklyn for a number of years, she is teaching at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for the 2008-2009 academic year. Material is located at 2553 Broad Avenue, two doors west of the now defunct, but still world famous, Beer Joint. Parking is available on both the north and south sides of Broad Avenue.

BRANDED - You Bring It, We Print On It

Saturday, September 27, 2008 NOON - 5PM Five in One Memphis presents a family-oriented daytime event this Saturday, the 27th of September. Bring your own fabric or items and select images from our collection to be printed on your objects while you wait and watch. With over 25 images to pick from, you can adorn your curtains, bedsheets, pillowcases, tshirts, or countless other items with the images of your choice. Our images come from Memphis based artists including C.Michael Andrews, Alice Laskey-Castle, Tommy Kha, and others. We have a collection of images that can work as patterns, central images, as well as small accents on your objects. Impressions start at $5 and package deals are available. We will also offer imprintable items for purchase at the show, including tshirts, tote bags, and paper. BRANDED is a family oriented event, we will be serving popcorn and soft drinks while you wait for our images to be branded on your objects. BRANDED is a one day only patio event at Five in One (VINI). Imprintable objects are limited to those which can withstand the curing process, which requires 425 degree heat for 45 seconds. Plastics are not imprintable. Erin Harmon, Beth Edwards and Susan Maakestad at MCA's On the Street Gallery

On Friday, September 26th there will be an opening reception for Waterworks, an exhibition featuring work by Rhodes professor Erin Harmon, U of M professor Beth Edwards and MCA professor Susan Maakestad at MCA's On the Street Gallery at 338 South Main. The reception will go from 6-9 pm. Come visit.
