Light and Music at Odessa
Odessa presents "Light and Music," an exhibition of three new media works by Memphis artists John Garland, Ashley Gerst, and Taylor Martin.
Garland, a Memphis native, uses found recordings and a hodgepodge of lo-fi sound gear to create hypnotic sound collages with sculptural presence. Ashley Gerst's playful, gamelike sculptures and videos often employ audience participation. Part of her contribution to this exhibition was recently screened on the roof of the Urban Arts Commission during the Broad Ave. Art Walk. Taylor Martin works in photography, video, and installation. This screening will be the premiere of his video project "Two Edens (Conversations in Landscape)". It is a split screen video that moves through a landscape comprised of footage both appropriated and made by the artist.

About the exhibition Colvin writes: “Pier and Ocean and Main St. is a body of work I completed while living for a year in Fairhope, Alabama. Fairhope is a former artist colony on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. While living in Fairhope I worked as a arts administrator at a non-profit in downtown Mobile. The social and geographic distance between the two locations, -separated by the bay itself- created a very isolated, fertile, studio situation.”
In August of 2005 Colvin received his MFA in painting from the University of Alabama. He received an undergraduate degree in Art History from NYU in 1999 and holds a Masters in Art Education from UAB. This will be his second exhibition at Material.
Material is located at 2553 Broad Avenue. Parking is available on both the north and south sides of Broad Avenue.
