Frank D Robinson Jr: Your Blues Ain't Like Mine

Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine will run for ONE NIGHT ONLY: May 1, 2009

This show is exceptional for several reasons: Frank d robinson jr. has been a fixture in the Memphis art community since the early nineties, and has recently decided to move to New York. This show may one of the last opportunities to see his work in Memphis. The exhibition features over fifty works, and highlights his Women of the Storm series. The series was inspired by robinson’s interactions with those who were displaced by Hurricane Gustav. His work has been concerned with finding value in one’s self, and Women of the Storm focuses on the strength of the individual. robinson has chosen to focus on female survivors. He believes that women are less guarded than men; therefore the stories of female survivors are more honest and enlightening. Each of the paintings in My Blues Ain’t Like Your’s are beautifully crafted. The pieces radiate with vibrancy and life.
Frank d. robinson jr. is a native of Memphis. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Memphis in 1993. He earned a subsequent Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Painting and Drawing in 1998. And the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is currently the artist in residence at Caritas House. robinson has been exhibited at Nike, Schering Plough, Nippon Steel, and the Museum of Science and Industry. His work has the unifying theme of awareness. He has dealt with such issues as AIDS, infant mortality, and most recently breast cancer. robinson’s paintings incorporate everyday objects such as price tags and soda can tabs. These objects would be overlooked, but robinson imbeds them seamlessly into his compositions.

Gallery 314 and Emily Jenkins are thrilled to announce the solo exhibition for local artist Anne Davey: Splash: Works on Paper 2001-2009.
Splash will run for one night only on Thursday April 30, 2009.
The opening reception will be held at 314 South Main Street from 6-8pm on Thursday April 30, 2009.
Splash is an excellent culmination of Anne Davey’s aquatic scenes on paper. The show includes a variety of work ranging from small abstract paintings to large charcoal drawings. Key components of her compositions are the visual distortions created by water, and the dichotomy between the playfulness and danger associated with children swimming. The artist’s skill is highlighted through her ability to capture delicate moments of semi-abstraction when human figures seem warped by the properties of water. Splash provides an interesting and introspective opportunity to view these exceptional works on paper.
Anne Davey received her BA from Stanford and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 2003 she earned her MFA at Johnson State College and the Vermont Studio Center where she developed her interest in depicting aquatic compositions. She was selected by UrbanArt Commission to produce a permanent art installation at the Ed Rice Community. Her exhibitions include Forum Gallery, Minneapolis, MN, Groveland Gallery, Minneapolis, MN, Rochester Art Center, Rochester, MN, Dartmouth College, Dartmouth, NH, Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock, AR, Paint Creek Center for the Arts in MI, Julian Scott Memorial Gallery in VT, Second Floor Contemporary, Memphis, TN, and Perry Nicole Gallery, Memphis, TN. Anne is currently living and working in Memphis where she is represented by Perry Nicole Fine Arts.

The Art Department at Rhodes College and Adam Shaw Studio are very excited to announce the show, KÖOBETON, featuring work by the collaborative group THE 180 FINGER COLLECTIVE.
THE 180 FINGER COLLECTIVE: KÖOBETON will run for one night only on Friday, May 1st from 6-8 pm.
The exhibition will be hosted by Adam Shaw Studio at 2547 Broad Avenue.
The exhibition will feature work eighteen artists from around the country that come together in the early morning hours to work on drawings and paintings together. In the spirit of friendship we pass these paintings back and forth.
Members of the group include Alexandra Carter (Massachusetts), Douglas Degges (Louisiana), Elizabeth Hartman (Oklahoma), Hamlett Dobbins (Tennessee), Julianne Lindner (Mississippi), Mary Pat Pead (Florida), Kathleen Perniciaro (Missouri) , Colin Cox (Tennessee), Dean Shroyer (Alabama), Katherine Prince (Georgia), Molly Buck (Texas), Emma Fiandt (Indiana), Maggie Exner (Tennessee), Katherine Dunbar-Smith (Mississippi), Noelle Smith (Tennessee), Charlotte Watson (Florida), Christine Zhu (Texas), and Mary Claire Melton (Tennessee). This four-hour, one-day only event features works by Anna Kordsmeier and is a rare opportunity to collect artwork from an up-and-coming young artist. All works are priced at $100 or less. Anna Kordsmeier is graduating from Memphis College of Art this May with an M.F.A. Anna’s work is about memories of past experiences, and features prints, paintings, and mixed media pieces. Her work has been shown in galleries across the country; including Texas, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Memphis and New York City.
