Parallel Currents is both a web-based sound project found at http://parallelcurrents.com/ and an FM radio transmission found in Ashburn-Coppock Park at 88.7 FM, downtown Memphis.Phillip Andrew Lewis is a native Memphian, artist, teacher & director of Medicine Factory. Over the past year Phillip has been collecting and editing audio from around the Mississippi River and Chickasaw Bluff #4 for this public sound project which has been commissioned by Urban Art Commission. Parallel Currents provides an interactive experience of the sounds found in and around the river. Lewis uses a wide variety of media including photography, video, sound, installation & drawing to help extend our level of awareness about what is often overlooked.
Phillip received a BA in psychology from University of Memphis in 1996 and an MFA in studio art from Memphis College of Art in 2000. Last year Phillip was featured at Brooks Museum of Art where he created an artificial skylight in one of the lower galleries with accompanying sound taken from a small pocket of air directly above the museum. He also created a temporary architectural feature in the Art Museum at University of Memphis with over a million translucent drinking straws. Phillip is also the recipient of the Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship in Visual Art for 2007.Phillip Lewis has exhibited nationally and internationally at Rogalund Kunst Museum (Norway), SPAS Gallery at Rochester Institute of Technology (New York), Graduate Gallery at CUNY (New York), SPACES Gallery (Cleveland), Bradbury Gallery at University of Arkansas, Mesa Arts Center (Arizona), McDonough Museum of Art (Ohio), and Second Floor Contemporary (Memphis). Currently, Phillip has work on view at the Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville and the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio.
