Material is pleased to present its fifth exhibition of 2008: Mark Nowell: Boondoggler.
The exhibition will open with a reception for the artist on Friday, July 4 from 6-8 pm.
The exhibition will run through July 31.
Mark Nowell has been a mainstay in the Memphis arts community since he began showing his work in the early eighties, he has been featured in numerous exhibitions in alternative spaces ranging from the now defunct Memphis Center for Contemporary Art to Marshall Arts. Nowell will also be featured in the upcoming annual The Price is Right show at David Lusk Gallery. Nowell has been busy on two outdoor installations for the Urban Arts Commission: at the Hickory Hill Police Precinct and the Katie Saxton Community Center. The exhibition at Material is Nowell’s first in over three years.
The exhibition will feature a number of smaller works, providing a well needed respite from the large scale public commissions Nowell has become known for. In the artist’s words: “The show will consist of works in relief, meditation drawings and small sculptures that illustrate a sensitive marriage of materials and technique. These works possess a careful attention to craftsmanship and obscure symbolism.”
Additional information and images of the artist’s work can be found at his website: http://www.marknowellart.com/.
Material is located at 2553 Broad Avenue. Parking is available on both the north and south sides of Broad Avenue.
