Lillian and Morrie Moss Lecture:
Artist, Critic and Curator Michelle Grabner
Thursday, 12 February 2009 at 7:00pm in Blount Auditorium in Buckman Hall at Rhodes College.
Michelle Grabner, a Chicago-based artist, critic and curator, will discuss her arts practice. Free and open to the public, the talk begins at 7 p.m. in Blount Auditorium and is sponsored by The Lillian and Morrie Moss Endowment for the Visual Arts.
Grabner and husband Brad Killam run an artist exhibition space in Oak Park, IL called The Suburban (http://www.thesuburban.org/). It has hosted a number of exhibits by international artists. Grabner’s own work, including black spiral paintings, spider web drawings, rainbow-colored wall drawings, and woven paper installations, has been shown in exhibits in Chicago, New York, Boston, London and Berlin. In 2008, the University Galleries of Illinois State University published a book titled Remain in Light about her work.
Since 1996, Grabner has taught painting and drawing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In a personal statement she writes, “I regularly meet students in exhibitions at alternative spaces in Chicago. The class then has the opportunity to see how theory and practice work outside of school. I show them dialogue in action. It is also important to see that dialogue takes different forms and succeeds in different ways.”
In addition, Grabner has been a contributor to Art Forum, New Art Examiner, Frieze and Tema Celeste.
