Kate Parker is excited to announce the solo exhibition: Rachel Thompson: Considering Others
Considering Others will run one night only, Friday April 17th from 6:30 - 9:30 pm
The opening reception and show will be held at the historic MGM building on South Second Street, across from The Happy Mexican restaurant (located at 385 S 2nd Street)
Considering Others will feature seven new paintings from the ever-introspective artist, Rachel Thompson. She has carefully handcrafted traditional patterns in a combination of contemporary and historic color palettes. Straying from her typical painting style, Thompson makes use of her love affair with fabrics and yarns as if the mediums were actually paint. Carefully sewn ornate designs frame figurative stitching of various scenes that announce common social etiquettes. We are reminded to take our hats off when we go indoors; that it is proper to pass the salt and pepper in unison; and please, do not forget to turn off your cell phone in any situation where it might be an improper distraction. With the specificity of cultural practices Thompson has chosen to highlight in this body of work, she says her goal in producing these images is in no way hidden or alternative to what is immediately presented to the viewer. Rather, she hopes the mere presence of these works will mimic the existence of these manners in our society. Furthermore, she hopes the visual representation of implicit cultural practices might probe us to think about why it is we follow these unspoken cannon of what is decent, of what is polite.
Rachel Thompson was born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1986. She graduated from Rhodes College in May 2008 with a major degree in Art and a minor in Urban Studies. She has participated in several group shows, including the most recent 2008 Senior Thesis Exhibition at Rhodes College. Her work has also been featured in past Annual Juried Student Exhibitions at Rhodes College.
