Material is pleased to present its fourth exhibition of 2008: Brian Bishop: (pause). The exhibition will run for one night only with a reception on Friday, March 14th from 6-8 pm.
The artist will also present a lecture on his work at Rhodes College in Blount Auditorium in Buckman Hall at 7 pm on Thursday, March 13th at 7 pm.

Brian Bishop's show at Material will consist of three recent large-format charcoal drawings on paper. The lush five foot square images are like his better known encaustic paintings in the subject, composition and their tactile sensuality. About his work Bishop writes: “The principle interest of my studio practice is the exploration of the fine line between the forgotten or overlooked moment and the fetishized memory as simultaneously seen through the filters of portraiture in the west, snapshot photography and the contemporary cultural phenomenon of constant surveillance. Inevitable it also addresses memory, as it is known through photography, and questions if these moments represent truth or fiction.”
A Memphis native Brian Bishop received his BFA from Memphis College of Art in 1993 and went on to receive his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1995. He was an essential member of the Plan B Gallery in the mid-nineties. In 2002 Bishop moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he is an assistant professor of art there at the University of Alabama. He has had a number of one person shows locally and nationally including Ledbetter Lusk Gallery in 1999 and Second Floor Contemporary in 2005. He has had solo exhibitions at Youngblood Gallery in Atlanta, the Cheekwood Museum in Nashville, and at the University of Delaware in Newark. His work has been included in a number of group shows across the country.
Material is located at 2553 Broad Avenue. Parking is available on both the north and south sides of Broad Avenue.
