A MOBILE MUSEUM OF DIALOGUES, STORIES, AND LIVING HISTORIES SURROUNDING THE WAR IN IRAQ TRAVELING ACROSS THE UNITED STATES
Creative Time is thrilled to be partnering with the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the MCA Chicago, to present internationally recognized visual artist Jeremy Deller's latest project. Conversations About Iraq is a mobile "museum"-an RV carrying people with extensive experience and knowledge of Iraq that will travel across the country. The project will foster a non-partisan, neutral platform for dialogue that focuses on the war in Iraq and its impact on the daily lives of Americans and Iraqis. Conversations About Iraq doesn't take a stance for or against the war; instead, this important artistic project will deal with the complexities of a nation at war through friendly and open conversations. This "mobile museum of conversations" is an exciting way to bring contemporary art into dialogue with local audiences across the country.
Traveling in the RV with the artist will be: an Iraq war veteran or expert on the military component of the war; an Iraqi citizen aware of the cultural, architectural, and geographic story of Iraq; an embedded journalist; and at least one Creative Time representative. In addition, a variety of everyday items from Iraq, gathered from individuals before and during the tour, will be on display and serve as catalysts for conversations.
About the Artist:Jeremy Deller is an internationally recognized artist who has exhibited widely in institutions, biennials, and galleries over the past ten years. His renowned practice focuses on cultural history-how it is made, recorded, manipulated, and remembered. One of his most remarkable works, a recreation of the 1984 Orgreave miners' strike in the north of England, was subsequently made into a documentary by Mike Figgis and was broadcast internationally. A more recent work, which brought together documentation and souvenirs from the town of Crawford, Texas, won him the prestigious Turner Prize, awarded by London's Tate Gallery, in 2004.
About Creative Time:After 35 years of New York-based projects, Jeremy Deller: Conversations About Iraq continues Creative Time's national program, which was launched with Paul Chan's Waiting for Godot in New Orleans in 2007. By bringing Deller's project to communities around the nation, Creative Time deepens its commitment to artists who make work outside New York City, and who share our belief in the transformative power of public art with the broadest possible audience. Recent projects include Tribute in Light, which served as a gesture of hope and healing after 9/11; Doug Aitken: sleepwalkers, a film projected on the Museum of Modern Art, NY; and Democracy in America: The National Campaign, a major exhibition and series of projects that engaged art and activism in nine U.S. cites in 2008, visit: http://creativetime.org/
About UrbanArt:UrbanArt is a 501c3 non-profit organization that works to cultivate a dynamic, vibrant, and nurturing community through public art and design in Memphis, Tennessee. Since 1997 it has produced over 80 public art projects, and continues to enliven the public domain today.
