Art Village Gallery and Hai-Ching Chang are excited to announce a solo photography exhibition: Raleigh Rodger: A nod is as good as a wink…
A nod is as good as a wink… is a one-night-only show on Friday April 24th.
The reception for A nod is as good as a wink… will be held at 410 South Main Street from 6 - 8 p.m., Friday April 24th, 2009.
A nod is as good as a wink… will feature five recent photographs from the emerging photographer, Raleigh Rodger. This photographic exhibition is not only an aesthetic delight, with beautiful and strikingly original photographs of altered realities, but it examines the idea of the unconscious being a creative force on our lives. Femininity, identity and death are some of the significant themes recurring in her photographs. A summation of the work is best expressed from the following excerpt taken from her project’s description, “I am interested in Carl Jung’s theory, the unconscious mind acting independent and creative of its own accord, and how memories and dreams represent that. I have been exploring the importance of folklore, myths, fairy tales and urban legend in all cultures and in particular, their effects on my own life. These avenues of exploring metanarrative and archetypes that are embedded into forms of escapism have been an important part of human existence.”
Raleigh Rodger received her B.A. in Photography from Montana State, Bozeman. After graduation, she worked as a photographer and designer. She is currently in her second year of graduate school at University of Memphis. She has been all around the globe to capture everything from corporate setting photography to the unconventional abstract. She has participated in several group shows, including “Venice International Photo Contest” at Venice, Italy and “25th Annual Juried Student Exhibition” at the University of Memphis in 2007. Her work has been shown in Society for Photographic Education Exhibition at the Memphis Collage of Art and in “They Are Us, We Are Them” exhibition at the Medicine Factory in Memphis in 2008. Her work “Deflection” has won the Graduate Purchase Award in the “26th Annual Juried Student Exhibition” at the University of Memphis in 2009.
Art Village Gallery is free and open to the public and is located on 410 South Main Street. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sunday and Monday.
